Welcome to the Jook Tarot website.

VAMP: the Theda Bara tarot deck has now been completed and is available for sale at our Etsy shop here.

The Jook tarot deck is being created using the wet plate collodion photographic process that I describe in more detail here.

The equipment I have dates back to the Victorian era, and the chemicals and process followed are all true to that period. The theme of the deck is also influenced by vintage photography from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, inspired by images of fortune tellers, gypsies, dancers, silent movie stars and film stills. Some of these images appear in the header image at the top of this page. Add to that Victorian and Renaissance paintings and symbolism and references to tarot decks through the ages from the Visconti deck to Tarot de Marseille, to the French occultist decks and onto the Rider Waite deck and then more modern decks.

The wet plate collodion process adds a mysterious and mystical aesthetic to the images that perfectly matches the look and feel I want to achieve.

The name ‘Jook’ Tarot is just a working title. The resulting deck will hopefully have a better title than my name!

Alongside the Jook Tarot, I am creating a tarot deck based on the silent film star, Theda Bara. See here for more information about this project.
